Jefferson County Animal Control announced on Mar. 11 that its official Facebook page was compromised by scammers who posted a fraudulent advertisement for puppy adoptions. The post included a link to an “adoption application” and requested a $300 deposit from interested individuals.

The warning is important for local residents who may be seeking to adopt pets, as the scam could result in financial loss and disappointment for animal lovers. Officials said the dogs featured in the post are not actually available for adoption.

“This is a scam to steal your money. The dogs are not available for adoption,” Jefferson County Animal Control said in its statement.

The agency urged community members not to click on the suspicious link or share the misleading post. Instead, they advised reporting the compromised page directly to Facebook.

No further details about how long the page had been compromised or whether any individuals had already fallen victim were provided in the announcement.
